This project is part of NASA/EOS project to estimate global terrestrial evapotranspiration from earth land surface by using satellite remote sensing data. MOD16 global evapotranspiration product can be used to calculate regional water and energy balance, soil water status; hence, it provides key information for water resource management.

Regional precipitation analysis with Python

We want to analyze average annual precipitation data on a regional scale for North of Peru. The dataset has 20 stations from the Peruvian desert coast, Andes and rainforest with differences in elevation and precipitation rates.

The main objective is to analyze precipitation patterns and trends by plotting them in different ways using Python.

Statistical analysis of precipitation data with Python

Usually, we use probabilistic approaches when dealing with extreme events since the size of available data is scarce to address the maximum for a determined return period.

Precipitation data present challenges when we try to fit to a statistical distribution. This is an exercise done with 10 years record of precipitation for the Morropon station (Piura-Peru) affected by El Niño and La Niña events in years 98 and 99 respectively.

 

 

 

Water and mining conflicts in the information age

My father was an olive farmer and very active on the valley olive farmer association in Peru. In the eighties, there was a tailings spill that afected the river water and the irrigated lands. Based on what they could understand of contamination and water chemistry, they had the iniciative of taking water samples and show them to water authorities.

Soil cover system design for mine waste dumps

 

Surface water and groundwater surrounding a mining operation can be significantly affected by contaminated seepage from the Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) in the waste-dumps and tailings deposits. An evaluation for prevention and mitigation of environmental impacts generated by the DAR is necessary to minimize the impact to the environment.

Assessment of land subsidence from pumping

 

The MODFLOW SUB-WT code has been developed to simulate vertical compaction in regional groundwater flow models because due to pumping. MODFLOW SUB-WT can simulate changes in groundwater storages and compaction in discontinuous layers or extensive confining units. The MODFLOW SUB-WT modeling code considers the compaction of a particular layer of the numerical model as a function of effective effort changes in the layer.

How much does a groundwater modeler cost?

 

After my last job as a staff groundwater modeler I have received 6 unsolicited job offerings. Of course many modelers with more years and more conections than I have received much more offers, however, I feel happy with my humble record. The point of this comparison is that senior groundwater modelers with experience in mining hydrogeology are really scarce. Mining and consultant companies are looking for talented groundwater modelers, and somehow there are not much modelers coming out from the universities.

When I was in second semester of my master degree, the course director gave me this advice: “Learn MODFLOW and you will have a job”. That was a small and sincere advice that helped me on the last eight years as hydrogeologist – numerical modeler. Nowadays, I want to give the guidelines for the interested people of how to be a senior hydrogeologist in 6 years.

 

 

 

Tailing and waste dump seepage evaluation and remediation

 

Current and historical mining activities have a seepage and waste-dumps legacy that are the concern for mining companies, population and regulatory authorities. Old waste-dumps have not been regulated and most of the old tailings have been deposited in soils without covering. Tailing deposits and waste-dumps should be analyzed in a particular way because of the ground, instalation details, mineralized body geology, mined type, weather and other parameters.
